Mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA Type-C · Mitopeptide
Mitochondrial-derived peptide. Studied in AMPK activation and metabolic aging.
MOTS-C is a mitochondria-derived peptide (mitopeptide) encoded in the mitochondrial genome, discovered by Changhan David Lee's lab at USC (Cell Metabolism, 2015). It regulates nuclear gene expression through AMPK activation, enhances insulin sensitivity, and promotes metabolic homeostasis. Plasma MOTS-C levels decline with age, positioning it as a longevity research tool.
Store lyophilized at -20°C. Reconstituted: 2–8°C, use within 4–6 weeks.
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA (the 12S rRNA gene) rather than nuclear DNA, which makes it a signal the mitochondria themselves send to the rest of the cell. It was identified by Pinchas Cohen's laboratory at USC in 2015.
In published research it activates AMPK, the cell's main fuel-sensing enzyme, and shifts cells toward glucose uptake, fatty-acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis, the same adaptations seen with endurance exercise, which is why it is often described as an exercise mimetic.
